BORERS
Pro Team Group timber pest inspections include termites borers and timber fungi.
Lyctine borers
Lyctine borers (lyctid or powder post beetles) in the family Bostryciidae are the most common borer attacking seasoned hardwoods throughout Australia.
Female beetles lay their eggs in the pores (vessels) of hardwood timbers, and larvae feed upon starch and other nutrients in the sapwood. Attack by lyctine borers is restricted to sapwood (the trees outer band of living, sap-containing tissue). Many older houses in Victoria have hardwood timber frames, the extent of attack is restricted to the sapwood of this timber.
Anobium punctatum, Furniture Beetle
During a Pre-purchase Timber Pest Inspection Pro Team Group inspect for Anobium punctatum, or the furniture beetle, a member of the family Anobiidae.
It will most often be found in old seasoned softwood though it can attack some hardwoods. It is commonly found in baltic pine floorboards. Attack begins predominantly in the sapwood, but will spread to the heartwood. Attack can be relatively slow so but if not addressed can cause serious damage.
Females lay their eggs in rough sawn surfaces, cracks and crevices, end grain of timber. Larvae cause damage by degrading cellulose fibres in wood with the aid of symbiotic yeasts, their exit holes are 1-2 mm diameter, the frass from the hole feeling gritty and the appearance of the attacked wood can look honey combed as the lavae tunnel along and across the grain of the timber.
